Many stools come in both counter height and bar height.  Generally, residential counters are 36 inches high.  For this use a 24 or 26 inch stool is required.  Many people like the additional height and comfort that a 26 inch stool provides.  However, if you are a taller person the more common 24 inch stool is best.  Bar tables and counters are generally 42 inches high.  These tables require stools to be 30 inches or more in height.  Many stools have hydraulic lifts and have adjustable heights.

Stools are also available as stationary seats, swivel seats or as a backless style.
